Nintendo’s latest gadget, the Switch 2, seems to have a mixed bag with its screen. A review from a Chinese source, Chimolog or something like that, points out that the screen’s response time kinda sucks—about 17.06 ms on average. But, eh, who trusts these numbers without knowing how they tested it, right?
The screen is supposed to be a 1080p, 120 Hz, 7.9-inch LCD thing, which sounds cool. But apparently, at its worst, it drags along at a slow 27.46 ms response time. To put it bluntly, it’s like trying to watch a racing game in slow motion when it should be zooming at 60 FPS. It got compared with a bunch of 60 Hz and 75 Hz monitors, and, yeah, came in last. Not even close. Ouch.
Now, the next monitor in the lab was this Innocn M2U 27 Mini-LED thingy, with a much snappier 11.06 ms. I mean, that’s like 65% faster! Makes you wonder what Nintendo was thinking—or if they were thinking at all.
Now, in terms of contrast, brightness, and color, Chimolog claims the Switch 2 holds its own—doing as well as or better than other screens out there. It’s like they said, “Hey, let’s nail the colors and forget about speed!” The screen’s supposed to cover 100% of the sRGB, 99.6% of DCI-P3, 97.9% of Adobe RGB, and 71.9% of Rec. 2020 color spaces. But, wait—there’s more! A contrast ratio of 1309:1 and some brightness jazz thrown in too.
One hitch, though, is the text readability. Apparently, the RGB setup is all wavy, causing text to look fuzzy. Kinda reminds me of the issue with some OLED screens? Maybe?
Oh, and they couldn’t really check the 120 Hz performance due to testing limits, but let’s face it, not really encouraging news. Usually, higher refresh rates are better, but who knows with this one.
Overall, the screen’s basically the worst you can get right now—even compared to the original Switch. Can you believe it? Monitors Unboxed found the old Switch’s screen was about 10ms faster!
But here’s the kicker: despite all this tech drama, gamers are still snapping up the Switch 2 like hotcakes. Record-breaking sales with 3.5 million units in just four days! That’s insane! Maybe one day Nintendo will roll out an OLED version to fix this. We can always hope, right?
