Okay, so. Brilliant Labs is up to something again—smart glasses stuff. Another gadget rolling out, probably by the time I’m done rambling here. This company’s been at it since, oh…2019, maybe? Feels like ages ago, but that’s just 2019 calling itself “ages ago.” First, they gave us Monocle, some single-display gizmo you latched onto your own glasses. Honestly, sounds a bit like Doctor Who kind of tech—except, no TARDIS included.
Fast forward to 2023, and bam! We’ve got Frame. Now, Frame was different—this thing was sleek, light, and had a camera. Less than 40 grams, they say. And if it broke? Well, hopefully, it’s easy to fix. But that’s just me being paranoid.
Oh, and here’s a pic. (Not that my description does it justice, but maybe you’re the “need to see it” type). It’s not exactly going to win a beauty pageant among eyewear, but functionality over form, right?
Anyway (wait, what was I on about?)—Frame was designed to be like your own little AI assistant. Kind of like wearing your smartphone on your face. Useful? Maybe. Overkill? Possibly. You could do all sorts of things with it—ask questions, translate stuff on the fly, surf the web. My brain’s just tired thinking about the potential distractions.
Anyway, new gadget’s coming this month, July 31st, specifically. Detour to more speculation: Bobak Tavangar, the co-founder and CEO, or chief bottle washer for all I know, will be answering questions on some subreddit. My take? A launch day Q&A’s as good a place as any to derail your day with tech chatter.
Got a peek at the newbie device—they’ve ditched the round spectacle look, mind you. Going modern, whatever that means. Come July, we’ll figure out if they made it cooler or just tried too hard. Maybe both.
Meanwhile, smart glasses land isn’t just Brilliant Labs turf anymore. Meta’s doing their thing with EssilorLuxottica (say that three times fast). Then there’s Xiaomi, another big player getting in on the action. And hang on…looks like Google’s cooking something up with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. That’s one heck of a collab.
Brilliant Labs is still one of the only ones right now offering glasses with some screen on it. But won’t be long, Google says they’ll put out a model with a display. And get this—Meta might be concocting something involving a wrist controller. Just great, more smart stuff I’ll probably end up losing.
Alright, I probably rambled off somewhere in there. But hey, it’s just smart glasses, and we’re all still figuring out if they’re the next big thing or just another ho-hum chapter in tech evolution.
