Okay, so where do I even begin? Sucker Punch Productions went all out on this Thursday—or maybe it was Wednesday? Nah, pretty sure it was Thursday. Anyway, they dropped some major deets on the PS5 game Ghost of Yōtei during this whole Sony State of Play thing. It’s like, future ghosts (whatever that means) can now geek out over Atsu’s weapon stash and her wild ride across Ezo. Oh, and there’s talk of some fresh and familiar ways to present the game.
Remember Ghost of Tsushima’s Kurosawa Mode? Yeah, that old-school nod to Akira Kurosawa. Guy behind epic samurai flicks like Seven Samurai. It’s popping back up in Ghost of Yōtei. Seriously, black and white tones, that grainy film vibe, and dramatic Japanese dialogue. It totally makes me want to grab some popcorn — or maybe not, never mind.
Now, hold up—Takashi Miike Mode is coming to the scene, and it’s a whole vibe. Closer camera angles, bloodier battles, muddy mayhem. Miike, you probably know him (or you don’t, no pressure) from the 2013 movie 13 Assassins. And here’s a twist: they’re working with Samurai Champloo’s Shinichirō Watanabe for this lo-fi beats mode. Chill fight songs while Atsu goes on her revenge spree? Something about that tickles my funny bone. Or maybe it doesn’t. Whatever.
Oh! They also showed off some sick new weapons. Dual katanas, ōdachi, and the kusarigama, slicing through foes with style. I could’ve sworn I saw a disarm move… but then again, could’ve just been my imagination. There’s a whole “explore the wild” thing going on too—like following wildlife to secret spots. Feels kind of Elden Ring-ish. You know, those “what’s that over there?” moments.
Then, boom—Limited Edition stuff. Consoles and controllers spruced up with Ghost of Yōtei flair. Mount Yōtei decals? And Atsu on the controller? Talk about taking attention to detail too seriously—or maybe it’s cool. Who’s to say?
Ghost of Yōtei is sticking with the Ghost name, but plot twist: it’s not a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. Fast forward 300 years, set in Ezo (yep, now called Hokkaido). We’re following Atsu, who’s on this revenge kick against the Yōtei Six. Kind of grim, taking them down, racking up bounties… all that jazz. Players can actually choose who to take out first. Sweet freedom, right?
Alright, I’m out. Might have missed something—oh well!
