Alright, so there’s this chat I had with Brandon Adler, the game director for The Outer Worlds 2 – yeah, that game. We were at the Summer Game Fest 2025, and you know, just sitting there, soaking in the awesomeness of it all. Anyway, Adler drops this bomb that the sequel’s gonna be darker. Like, less goofy. Apparently, Leonard Boyarsky’s vibe just took over the whole thing. His words, not mine. I mean, what’s a game without its quirks, right? But then again, maybe a bit of seriousness wouldn’t hurt. Depends on your mood, I guess.
Boyarsky and Tim Cain, the OG brains behind Fallout, were also part of the original. Tim’s chilling now – stepped back, you know, so it’s all Leonard moving the chess pieces. How crazy is that? Might work wonders though. Who knows?
I mean, cheers to this darker angle! Seriously, who doesn’t want a bit of grit now and then? The first game was cool, don’t get me wrong, but the humor sometimes felt like someone trying too hard at a party. Or maybe that’s just me. You tell me.
Let’s talk fallout (pun intended). Dark humor dances on the same stage as grit. Fallout did it well, and fingers crossed Outer Worlds 2 nails it. It’s like hoping for a surprise punchline but Preferring the punch. If that makes any sense. Probably doesn’t. Nevermind.
Here’s to seeing more shadowy plots and spine-chilling scenes! Hopefully, the narrative gets time to breathe without a laugh track jumping in. You know?
So, my buddy Brendan Lowry talks about how factions are front and center in this new installment. There’s this whole drama brewing over Arcadia – our new stomping ground. Three factions – not exactly the peacekeepers. The Protectorate, Auntie’s Choice (no idea what that name is about), and The Order of the Ascendant. All hilariously shady with their “good intentions.”
And don’t even get me started on the companions. Five of them! Each one, a delightful mix of dark and twisted. Aza’s all about the violence – no judgment here. Marisol? An assassin probably tying up loose ends. Tristan wants vengeance but couches it as justice. Sure, dude.
It’s like, will I steer these folks towards redemption, or join in their mischief? Why does this remind me of all those painstaking Baldur’s Gate 3 choices? That game really turns the screws on the ol’ decision-maker.
Back to reality, though. A toned-down comedy routine could actually do wonders here. Just brings out the personality of the adventurers we tag along with.
I’m practically counting days till October. With its dark intrigue, Outer Worlds 2 sounds like it’s carved from a different stone. Of course, I won’t say no to some laughs but let’s not dive into slapstick disaster territory.
Mark that calendar, folks, October 29, 2025. Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and hey, if you’re buddy-buddy with Xbox Game Pass, you’re all set!
