Okay, so imagine this—Meta’s back at it again, doing their super techy thing with glasses. Earlier this year, out came Aria Gen 2. You think you’ve seen it all? Nope. They were all hush-hush initially, but now they’re spilling the beans to researchers. Something big for AR, perhaps, is on the horizon.
So, yeah, Meta’s letting us peek behind the curtain now. They’ve been all, “check out these specs,” talking about sound, cameras, sensors, computing mojo—whole shebang. Sure, it’s not full-blown AR because—get this—it doesn’t have a display. But isn’t it fascinating where this could lead? The next-gen AR glasses, probably.
Right, computer vision. It’s kind of a big deal if AR’s gonna be a thing. We’re talking about glasses that could literally map your room. Wild, right? Now, Aria Gen 2’s got four (yep, four!) CV cameras, way more than before. They’ve jacked up the field of view and stereo overlap. So, 3D tracking? Depth? It’s bananas what they can do.
And in this blurry room—Meta showed us—these glasses were pulling off SLAM like it’s nothing.
What else they got? New sensors, clever computing upgrades. Like, you’ve got this light sensor, mic in the nose (why? But kinda cool.) clearer audio, even heart monitoring.
What’s cooking in its brain? Meta put the thing on steroids with real-time machine learning on this custom chip. You’ve got odometry, eye-tracking—even hand-tracking like a sci-fi movie. Plus, new radio tech that’s faster than you can say “multi-device sync.”
And, oh! The weight! These bad boys are light. Think regular glasses but tricked out with tech at around 74-76g. Crazy, right? They fold like the classics too, so no futuristic aliens here. Yet.
Though, they’re mum about the battery—only some USB-C hinting. Maybe you’ll tether it for more juice?
Okay, so the human-machine blend. Aria Gen 2 watches how you see your world. It’s like making coffee while these glasses track your eye flicks and heartbeats. The environment? It’s got CV cameras, magnetometers, loads of tech trying to understand space like humans do. See? Future of AR and all.
Meta talks a good game about Aria Gen 2 setting the stage for the next big computer wave. Are AR glasses gonna replace phones? Not tomorrow, but Meta says it’s aiming for something soonish.
So many AR attempts already—like the XREAL One Pro—but getting everything right in one device? It’s not easy. Meta’s trying with Orion too, which hooks up to a compute unit. Meta’s Andrew Bosworth hints Orion might launch this decade, aiming a little higher than phone prices.
Anyway, we’ll get more on Aria Gen 2 at CVPR 2025 in Nashville. Can’t wait to see what they show. Bet they’ll have hands-on demos, so mark June 11th – 15th down if you’re near Music City.
