Sure thing, here we go:

So, guess what? Another Yakuza game is jumpin’ onto a Nintendo console. Yep, it’s happening. The Wii U had its moment with one, and the Switch joined in with a slick Yakuza Kiwami version. Now, Yakuza 0 is stepping up as the Switch 2 gets its launch. And oh boy, I’ve been fiddling around with it for a bit now.
Yakuza 0, if you can believe it, is hitting the big 10-year mark in Japan. It originally showed up on PlayStation 3 & 4. This new Switch 2 version? They’re calling it a director’s cut. A bit ironic since, well, the original director and lead producer have waved goodbye to SEGA. Anyway, what’s new? English voiceovers, extra cutscenes, and this Red Light Raid mode that’s been tossed in.
Spent a good 45 minutes with the docked version, and you know what? It runs smoother than you’d expect. We snagged some direct feed gameplay, and it looked rock solid at 60 frames per second. Is it in full 4K? Can’t say for sure, but hey, 1440p at least. Buzzed a SEGA rep about any HDR action, but nope, not happening.
If you’re new to Yakuza, starting with Yakuza 0 isn’t a bad choice. It’s packed – heaps of humor, some emotional stuff, plus all those mini-games you didn’t know you needed like karaoke and retro SEGA arcade games. The beat-‘em-up style? Lots of fun with the varying fighting styles. Oh, and exploring 1980s Japan? Sign me up again. Played it on PlayStation 4 once, but kinda hyped to dive back in.
Now about that Red Light Raid mode. Love-hate thing for me. Yakuza combat? Not my strong suit. Basically, you’re fighting through waves of enemies – bosses included. I dabbled with it solo (you can have some computer pals if you want), but there’s multiplayer too, locally or online. Characters are mostly side folks from the main game. First up for me was Ginger Chapman (think evil Chucky doll, but as a person). His moves? Pretty much knife-waving, which got old fast.
I had a bit more fun with a version of the main guy, Kazuma Kiryu. But unlike the main game where you unlock four fighting styles, here you stick to one. Beat enough enemies, earn cash, and level up your guys. Maybe buy some new characters too. Solo play was alright for a quick session, but man, I’d guess it’s way better with friends.
Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut is up there on my list for the new Switch 2 launch. I know, I know – played it already. But curious mind wants to hear the English voices. You can still flip back to Japanese if that’s your thing. Not totally convinced by this Red Light Raid yet. Might circle back to it when the game drops next month.
And that’s about it, really.
